Rocket League Controller Not Working? Fix It by Symptom
Not detected, double inputs, wrong buttons, car moving on its own. Find your symptom, run the one check that splits hardware from software, and fix it.
Most “Rocket League controller not working” problems are not Rocket League and not the controller. They are two programs fighting over the same device, a second device the game picked up first, or a worn stick that looks like a software bug. Find your symptom below, run the one check that splits hardware from software, and fix the layer that is actually broken.
Find your symptom
| What you see | Most likely cause | Jump to |
|---|---|---|
| Game does not react to the controller at all | Connection, wrong player slot, or a remapper holding it | Not detected |
| Every press happens twice, or the car spins on its own | Two layers reading one controller | Double inputs |
| Buttons do the wrong thing | Bindings changed, or a remapper profile | Wrong buttons |
| Car creeps or camera wanders with your hands off | Stick drift or a second device | Car moves by itself |
| Inputs drop or lag in bursts | Wireless connection or battery | Drops and lag |
| Controller moves the mouse cursor in-game | Steam’s desktop layout is active | Double inputs |
First: does it work outside Rocket League?
This is the one check that saves you an hour. Open our Stick Drift Test in a browser on the same machine and press a button. On Windows you can also run joy.cpl from Win+R.
- Nothing shows up anywhere: the problem is the connection or the controller. Start at not detected.
- It works in the browser but not in Rocket League: the controller is fine. Something between it and the game is the problem, usually on PC. Start at double inputs.
- It shows up, but a stick sits off center with your thumb off it: that is drift. Go straight to the stick drift guide.
Not detected at all
- Use a cable you know carries data. Plenty of USB cables only charge. If a cable works for file transfer from a phone, it carries data.
- One controller at a time. Unplug every other controller, wheel, flight stick and adapter. Rocket League can latch onto the wrong device as player one, and your real controller ends up doing nothing.
- Restart the game with the controller already connected. Plug in, wait for the system to recognise it, then launch.
- On console, check the user. On PS5 and Xbox, a controller signed in to a different profile than the one that launched the game will not control it. Switch to the right user from the controller’s home menu.
- Re-pair wireless controllers. Remove the controller from your Bluetooth devices and pair it again, or plug it in by USB to re-sync on console.
Double inputs on PC
This is the big one on PC. Several tools translate controllers, and Rocket League reads whatever reaches it:
- Steam Input remaps controllers for games launched from Steam, and can keep acting on a controller while Steam is open in the background.
- DS4Windows, DSX and similar tools make a PlayStation controller look like an Xbox controller by creating a virtual one.
- The controller itself, read directly by the game.
When two of those are active at once, the game sees the same thumb twice: every jump doubles, the car spins, or menus scroll on their own. When a translation layer sends mouse and keyboard instead, your controller moves the cursor.
The fix is one layer, not three. Pick one and turn the rest off:
- Simplest: close Steam and every remapper completely, plug in the controller, and launch. If the game reads it cleanly, you are done.
- If you use DS4Windows or a similar tool: turn on its option to hide the real controller, so the game only sees the virtual one. Then make sure Steam Input is not also handling that controller.
- If you use Steam Input: close DS4Windows and similar tools. Set Steam Input for Rocket League explicitly rather than relying on the desktop layout.
Change one thing, retest in Free Play, then change the next. Turning everything off and on at once tells you nothing.
Wrong buttons
If jump is on the wrong button in Rocket League only, open Settings → Controls and reset the controller bindings to default, then rebind one thing at a time. If the wrong button fires in every game, the problem is upstream: a remapper profile, a Steam Input layout, or the controller’s own profile on pro pads with remappable buttons or paddles. Check those before you touch the game.
If your bindings are right and you want better ones, our controller settings guide covers what to put where.
Car moves by itself
Two causes, one quick split:
- Unplug every other device. A wheel, flight stick or second controller resting slightly off center can steer your car. If the creep stops, that was it.
- Run the drift test. If a stick rests off center with your hands off, that is stick drift. Raise controller deadzone until the car stays still; if you need more than 0.10, the stick is worn. The stick drift guide covers clean, recalibrate, repair or replace.
Drops and lag on wireless
- Plug it in. If the problem disappears on a cable, it was the wireless link.
- Charge it. Low batteries cause dropouts on a lot of controllers before they cause a shutdown.
- Get line of sight. Move the receiver or dongle to a front USB port or a short extension cable instead of the back of a PC under a desk.
- Update firmware. Xbox controllers update through the Xbox Accessories app on Xbox or Windows; PlayStation controllers update from the PS5.
If the controller is wired and you still feel a delay, check your display before your controller: TV picture modes add input lag that feels a lot like a slow controller.
It works, it just feels wrong
Game updates and new installs can put your settings back to default. If everything responds but the car feels heavy or twitchy, rebuild your numbers in the Settings Lab and check the controller deadzone guide before you blame the hardware.
FAQ
Why is my controller not working in Rocket League on PC?
Usually two programs are fighting over it. Steam Input, DS4Windows, DSX and similar tools each translate the controller, and when more than one is active Rocket League sees either nothing it recognises or two controllers at once. Close every remapper except one, unplug other controllers, and test again.
Why does my controller press buttons twice in Rocket League?
Rocket League is reading the same controller twice: once as the real device and once as a virtual controller created by a remapper like DS4Windows. Turn on the remapper's option to hide the real controller, or stop using the remapper and let one layer handle it.
Why is my car moving by itself in Rocket League?
Either stick drift or a second input device. Unplug every other controller, wheel and joystick first. If the car still creeps with your controller untouched, test the stick with our browser drift test and raise controller deadzone until it stops.
How do I reset controller bindings in Rocket League?
Open Settings, go to the Controls tab and use the reset option on the controller bindings screen. If a button does the wrong thing in every game, the problem is a remapper or the controller's own profile, not Rocket League's bindings.
My PS5 controller works in menus but not in a match. Why?
On console, check the controller is assigned to the same user that started the game. On PC, it usually means a remapper is sending keyboard or mouse input for menus while the game expects a controller. Close the extra software and retest.
